Helena Walsh
Hi, I'm Helena,
I'm a fully accredited Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist, Play Therapist and Primary Teacher for the past 21 years.
I am an experienced training facilitator in the areas of play, behaviour and experiential wellbeing.
I believe that if we are serious about wellbeing in our schools, we need to ensure that we are trauma informed in our approach to discipline as well as using our ordinary, everyday interactions to nurture healthy relationships with pupils.
In my business, I review Codes of Behaviour to ensure they are trauma informed. I then faciliate separate trainings for school staff and parents to ensure that everyone understands the recent educational neuroscience that underpins a trauma-informed approach.
Additionally, I offer sustained support through optional weekly calls, providing ongoing guidance when needed.
And of course, all of my work comes back to play and playfulness...play is the language of children after all!
Services
As a mental health professional and an experienced teacher; I understand the value of increasing teachers and parents knowledge and skills in the area of Wellbeing. The Department of Education has set out four key areas of Wellbeing promotion in their Policy Statement and Framework for Practice. The fundaments of these translate into ensuring school staff know how to form nurturing relationships with pupils, are trauma informed in their approach to discipline and understand the value of play in children's lives, in my view. To really support our children, I see it as essential that both teachers and parents are on the same page in these key areas. I believe we need to do more then simply teach pupils 'wellbeing skills'; we need to let them experience wellbeing and understand how to nurture their own unique wellbeing.
